Do You Need Therapy?
Epstein Mental Health Inventory - Revised (EMHI-r) v. 3.1.1, © 2007-2023, Dr. Robert Epstein

You are about to take the updated version of the Epstein Mental Health Inventory (EMHI-r), a brief test that will help you determine whether you might benefit from consulting with a psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor, or other mental health professional. Designed by Dr. Robert Epstein (follow on Twitter at @DrREpstein), one of America's most distinguished research psychologists, this test screens for the most common behavioral, cognitive, and emotional disorders experienced by adults, based on standard diagnostic criteria used by psychotherapists.

The current version of the test was scientifically validated with an international sample of 201,625 people from 184 countries (Epstein et al., 2017). It is consistent with the "DSM 5," the current version of the diagnostic manual that is used by therapists worldwide.

A Russian version of this test is now available here. A French version of the older version of the test, which is based on the DSM IV, is available here.

NEW! If you're concerned mainly about a possible addiction - a bad habit that might be interfering with your life or relationships - complete the new questionnaire at https://AreYouAddicted.org.

https://AreYouAddicted.org will help you figure out whether this bad habit of yours - gaming, sex, drinking, overeating, or anything else - is serious enough for you to seek professional help, and it will help you find a qualified therapist. It also comes in two versions: You can either evaluate yourself, or you can evaluate someone else - a client, a colleague, an employee, your boss, your son or daughter, or your partner or spouse.

Please note that the mental screening tool you are about to complete at this website cannot give you an official diagnosis; only a qualified, licensed mental health professional can do that. In addition, this test is intended for English speakers, primarily in the U.S. and Canada. If you are not fluent in English, or if you are from some other part of the world, the results might not be valid for you.

Answer each question honestly, and click only on the statements with which you agree. The test takes only about 5 minutes to complete.

If you are conducting research and would like to collect data for a group that is taking this test - for a business, research study, classroom activity, or other purpose - please see our Group Testing Instructions.

Before we get to the inventory itself, we will ask you a few basic questions about yourself. Demographic information is being collected for research purposes only and will be kept strictly confidential. Remember: click only on the statements with which you agree.
