To view his 2019 Congressional testimony on the threat that Google and other tech companies pose to democracy, click here: https://EpsteinTestimony.com (7-min. video). In the weeks leading up to the November 2020 Presidential election and the January 2021 Senate runoff elections in Georgia, Dr. Epstein and his team captured more then 1.6 million ephemeral experiences on Google, Bing, Yahoo, YouTube, and Facebook - experiences that are normally lost forever and that are used by tech companies to shift millions of opinions and votes without people's awareness. Epstein's large-scale monitoring of the 2020 election forced Google to back down on two of its most powerful online manipulations. For a summary of his findings, view the 15-minute video at https://TheCaseForMonitoring.com. He and his associates are currently analyzing the wealth of data they preserved in the 2022 midterm elections - more than 2.4 million ephemeral experiences on multiple online platforms. More important, they are building the world's first nationwide "digital shield," which will protect our elections and our children from manipulation by Big Tech tech companies for the foreseeable future. Dr. Epstein's online psychological tests are now being taken by more than a million people each year. To check out the tests, click here. Do you need therapy? INTERNET STUDIES
On the topic of privacy, his initial research suggests that Internet users are divulging nearly 40 percent more personal information online than they would if knew more about how that information might be used. The typical Terms of Service (TOS) warning has no impact on behavior and therefore is useless as a warning. Adding a requirement that people click to acknowledge the TOS message creates a deterrent effect; adding a strong, explicit warning to the TOS message increases the effectiveness of the deterrent. Regarding elections, Dr. Epstein has found in multiple studies that search rankings that favor a political candidate drive the votes of undecided voters toward that candidate, an effect he calls SEME ("seem"), the Search Engine Manipulation Effect. As a result, Dr. Epstein has called for the regulation and monitoring of search engines. Without equal-time rules of the sort that protect political candidates in other media domains, he says, biased search rankings exercise undue influence over voter's opinions - influence that cannot be counteracted by individual candidates but that can easily determine who will win a close election. Dr. Epstein's la Dr. Epstein's Politico essay, "How Google Could Rig the 2016 Election," can be downloaded here. A related article, "The New Mind Control," published in Aeon magazine - which has been viewed more than 250,000 times - can be downloaded here. To view Dr. Epstein talking about SEME on the Larry King Show, click here. To view a comedy sketch about SEME on the RT network, click here. Dr. Epstein also recently discovered a simple yet powerful way that search suggestions can be used to shift opinions and votes, an effect he calls the Search Suggestion Effect (SSE). A report about his research on this topic can be viewed here. For additional information about Dr. Epstein's research on internet-related issues, visit the Internet Studies page at http://aibrt.org.
